Google vs. Facebook

An article appeared in my email this morning published by WebProNews asking the question which company, Google or Facebook, will emerge as the winner.  Essentially,  Facebook has the dominant position in social media while Google still hold the number one spot for search.

A brief reflection on business history clearly demonstrates no company dominates the market for very long.  Examples include Sears, Woolworth, Microsoft, AOL and the list goes on.  The article was valuable as a source of information on the developments occurring over time in the on line landscape where Google and Facebook play.  I posted a comment following the article as follows:

“The marketplace rewards those who provide what the market wants. Competition results in more and better ideas delivered faster and the consumer votes.

Google, Facebook, Microsoft and others have great people testing new ideas. The best ideas will result in the most economic reward. The winner is the consumer.”

If Facebook Were A Country….Social Media Revolution Updated

Did you know that if Facebook was a country, it would now be the third largest country in the world?

50% of mobile Internet traffic in the UK is on Facebook.

Statistics can be interesting and these are. However, most everyone know the growth in social media is huge.  Here are several ways I use Social Media

1. Research: finding answers to questions using Google and YouTube is very valuable for me.

2. Developing “like minded” relationships. I have developed themed groups on Facebook and I know the people who have joined those groups are interested in the information I share.

3. Expanding the development of business using informative articles posted to blogs and inviting people to those articles on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn.

Those are the Top 3 for me.  What about you?

Surprising Examples of Using Google Wave

Mashable published an article titled “4 Surprising Google Wave Uses”

“Four uses in particular have stood out for their cleverness and high fun factor, and you probably didn’t see any of them coming. …. if you’ve been following Wave closely you might have heard of them.”

The jury is still out on Google Wave and I think part of that is because it is in beta and at most 1 million people have activated it and far fewer have really taken it for a test drive.  I never underestimate Google so while time will tell on how Wave evolves check out the examples reported by Mashable.  Click Here

Google Wave: Best Use Examples

If you follow the keyword Google on Twitter, you  will notice an ongoing buzz about Google Wave.  This is the social networking application in beta from Google.

There are people who are testing this now and several sites that say they have complimentary invites to distribute are using name capture squeeze pages to entice you. We see no compelling reason to be overly interested in this pre-launch.  However, we have been tracking ideas on how Wave might be used.
